Powers: Jo is a genetic mutant. Scientists, in isolating and fooling around with the "gifted" gene, some rare lobster genes, and some normal human genes, created Jonelle in a synthetic womb. Thus, Jonelle is part lobster with a gifted ability to create explosions wherever her DNA is. For example, if Jo stuck a hair onto someone's back, she could make is explode. If dead skin fell off of Jo (happens naturally), Jo could make it explode. the size of the explosions is relative to the amount of DNA. If it was a hair, it could knock someone in a certain direction. If it was a blow from a claw that exploded, it could knock someone away. If Jo detonated herself (the only case in which Jo's power could damage her ((she would die)) ), then the explosion could destroy an entire building. Jo's explosions require dry air to be at their peak. Jo is immune to these explosions.
Weakness: As a result of messing around with genetics, Jo has had stunted growth. At the age of 15, this is predicted to be the pinnacle of her growth, which isn't saying much. She is extremely weak towards physical attacks of any kind, although she does not lack the dexterity to dodge.
Power related issues: Because her explosions require dry air, humidity can put a "damper" (pardon the pun) on Jo's powers. Being near water on a warm day causes the most humidity problems for Jo.
Personality: Jonelle is an outgoing person. Luckily, after leaving the lab she had found a city where she could learn amongst gifteds and normals at the same time. She is funny and takes honour and trust in high regard. She will not kick someone when they’re down, and gets angry at those who do. If someone “can’t trust her”, then she will take that as a large, personal blow and will make sure to exact proper payback.
History:
As mentioned earlier, Jonelle was created by genetic fooling around in a lab and was born from a synthetic womb.
The head scientist on the project, Dr. Gordon Steele, MD, was intensely curious about the “gifted gene”. He had seen many patients, and some later had turned out to be gifted. He had never been able to tell the difference between them, and soon started experimenting with DNA taken from the blood, received during tests of these patients. He took several courses on genetics to do so, and got funding from the government.
He was able to isolate a certain sector of genes that contained the “gifted” gene, but the difference between patients was too great because of the difference between gifts. Dr. Steele continued to study and study, keeping his work a secret, and eventually found a single strand of DNA that could be nothing other than the gifted gene. After experiments with stem cells and fetuses, he found that the children were not at all gifted. He gave them to an orphanage.
It was then Dr. Steele realized that the gene might only be a gene that allowed children to be gifted. He made more and more and more experiments, and eventually found that there were certain gene combinations that would create gifts. Dr. Steele still kept it a secret.
The government was slowly pulling their funding because Dr. Steele wasn’t reporting. However, he knew that he couldn’t report because everyone would be using this information wrongly. He had several more experiments to work, and only enough money for a few more isolations and 3 more synthetic births.
Dr. Steele made animal/human crosses, and the first two didn’t turn out well. He had one more birth, and he wanted to construct a gifted. So, he predicted the problem with both experiments and gave it one more shot. It was a perfect success, and Jonelle was born.
Jonelle Steele was named after the head-scientist’s sister, who passed away when he was very young. He raised the child for a year or two, before he realized that he didn’t have enough money, and was extremely stressed. He sent Jonelle to an orphanage in a city far away, near one called Cassis. A city where gifteds were accepted just as much as normal people.
Other than that, Jonelle had a fairly normal development, aside from the permanent record-type implications of her explosion power. She was of average popularity, and because her birth was not natural, she did not have the subconscious trauma that normal birth gave. She was mentally strong against insults and mind readers. When she was just in Grade 9, anti-gifted activists from another city bombed her school. Surviving the terrible attack, she hitch-hiked to Cassis, where she enrolled in the academy.
