A loud, persistent thunk could be heard coming from the cafeteria, echoing all the way out into the main hall. Arlaye was smacking the top of the coffee machine impatiently. Of all the things that irritated her, waiting for coffee had to be one of the most annoying. Eventually a few dribbles began to spill into her cup, and she rubbed her hands together in greedy anticipation. The coffee cup seemed to take longer than usual to fill; probably because it was twice the size of a normal cup. Arlaye wasn't known for being conservative when it came to coffee.

Terren walked into the cafeteria and went straight to the coffee machine. He picked up one of the cups and waited for the madwoman in front of him to stop assaulting the machine. He stared at her in a quizzical way. Was coffee really that important? Must be a teacher. He noted the dents in the top of the machine and figured she must have been a regular at this particular vendor. Not wanting to set her off, he just stood patiently behind her with cup in hand.

Arlaye didn't notice that anyone else was in the room until she picked up her cup and turned around. "Whoa!" she exclaimed, slopping some hot coffee onto her sleeves. She wasn't fazed about this, it happened fairly often. Squinting slightly, she focused on this person. Raising a hand, she pointed and tilted her head curiously. She couldn't remember if she'd already met this person, or if she had, what the name was. Eventually she just said, "Hey man," and waved politely, hoping he'd give her some sort of cue. ((She's no teacher, by the way. Not focused enough, lol))

"Hey," Terren said, looking at the coffee stains on her sleeves. He wasn't sure what to say and she was still standing between him and the coffee vendor. He just smiled and held onto his cup. He thought he'd seen this person before, but he couldn't remember where. "I don't mean to be rude," Terren started, "but could I maybe get some coffee? I'm kind of tired and I don't want to fall asleep on the floor somewhere again." He felt stupid saying "again". He'd only done it a couple of times and he made it sound like a habit.

"Asleep on the floor..." Arlaye repeated dimly. She paused to look into her coffee cup, then back at the machine. The cup was nearly full... but something was missing. "Sorry, milk," she monotoned, sidestepping out of the way. She liked black coffee some days, but today was not one of them. It then occurred to her that it might sound like she'd just called him 'milk'. "Uh, sorry man... what's your name again? I'm Arlaye." She resisted the urge to add 'and I have dreads' because that was fairly obvious. However she'd only had them a week and liked the attention they drew, whether good or bad.

"I'm Terren," he replied, stepping forward to attain the much-coveted nectar. Slowly, but surely, his cup filled to the brim with the hot, delicious, splendorous treat that was coffee. Adding three creams and four sugars, his creation was complete. Not willing to wait for the steaming to cease, Terren put the cup to his mouth, pouring in the delectable juice. Once half of it was gone, Terren looked again at Arlaye. "Sorry," he said, "I'm really thirsty."

"Yarmh, mbe foo," Arlaye mumbled, pouring coffee into her abyss of a mouth. Usually her mouth looked fairly normal, but when eating or drinking she could open it almost freakishly wide. She had vaguely wondered if it had something to do with her gift, but she couldn't be arsed to think too hard about that. She liked to just get on with drinking the coffee instead. Finished off her giant cup in record time, she smacked it down on the counter a tad louder than necessary. "Just like that, eh?" she said proudly, closely inspecting the countertop. "Whoops, I chipped it. Ah well, no one will ever know... ahem..."

"Just like that," Terren repeated. This lady was either crazy or she was a hundred times thirstier than he was. "That's amazing," Terren said, "after drinking that much coffee, you should have cracked the whole counter in half." Terren smiled. He was getting a little better at the whole talking thing. His horizons were widening so much, he could faintly see where he was going. "Don't worry, I won't tell anyone," he said in a moderately sarcastic whisper.

Arlaye stared glumly at the empty cup. No matter how much coffee she drank, it never had any effect on her. It used to keep her awake all night, but now she could barely wake up in the morning without a decent shot of caffeine. She was glad she hadn't broken the cup. She probably wasn't strong enough to do so even if she tried. Carefully she slid the cup so that it covered the chip, and grinned at Terren. "There, that should do it. Until later when somebody finally does the dishes." Lowering her voice, she whispered mock-conspiratorially: "By then it'll be too late! I'll be halfway across the city... heh heh heh."

"I'm sure they'll never find you all the way over there," Terren said. "Were you going to get more coffee?" he asked, motioning that he wanted more, but giving her a chance to go first, "you seem like you really need it. Rough day ahead? Or hard day yesterday?"

Arlaye would've liked more coffee, but that would involve moving the cup, and revealing the chip. And it wouldn't do much for her anyway, she was slowly realising that drinking so much coffee was futile. She shook her head 'no' and repositioned the cup slightly. "Nah, no hard day. Just the usual. Are you new here?" she asked, still not sure if she'd met him before and simply forgotten him. She wanted to know, because if not then she could stop wondering whether or not to feel guilty.

"New?" Terren asked. "I've been coming here for three years now. Almost four." Must not be a teacher. The teachers knew everything about the students. They had to. Seeing that she didn't want any more coffee, he repositioned his cup in the vendor and filled it to the top again.

Arlaye blinked a couple of times. "Oh. Not new, then. I've barely been here for one year," she said, silently marveling at how bad her memory was. She must have already seen him in class, then forgotten him. Oops. Tapping her fingertips on the countertop, she tried to think of other small talk she could make. From experience she knew that asking people what their shoe size was only earned her a strange look, no friends. "...Yeah," she said eventually, nodding and folding her hands together. "Well, I'm gonna go now... but I'll probably see you again." 'Probably at the coffee machine,' she added inwardly, walking away in a slight daze. She was already thinking about what she could find to eat. Maybe there would be a McDonalds in the city somewhere.
