Terren and Nora looked out into the world beyond Cassis. Terren looked back for a moment at all the things behind. For three years, that was his home. It was where he belonged. But there was something else. Something he had left behind. He looked at Nora with confused eyes.
Nora looked past the border, not moving her gaze. "They're waiting for you," she said. "Your past is in front of you now. It's been cut off, but you now have a chance to bring it back. It just takes a step," she said, stepping one foot past the border. "They're waiting for you," she repeated, "Mom and Dad are waiting for you. Don't you want to see them again?"
Terren's eyes teared up. He thought about what he was leaving behind. He thought about Michella, mostly. He looked up at the outside of Cassis. All it takes is a step, he thought, and my whole life will change... He thought about his parents.
"They loved you long before Michella," Nora said, getting tired of Terren's unwillingness to leave. "We have to go before it's too late," she said, "before they stop waiting." She held out her hand.
Terren looked back one more time. He looked then at Nora and her opened hand. He sighed. All it takes is a step, he thought. Taking her hand, he took a few steps past the border. He closed his eyes, feeling the tears well up. Fighting the urge to look back, he moved on, still holding Nora's hand. Images of all the interresting ones he had met in just the past few days sped through his mind.
Terren and Nora walked and walked until they reached their old home. With great guilt in their hearts, their parents accepted them back. Terren still thought every now and then about those he had met in Cassis and probably will for the rest of his life.
