His mother had died of cancer when he was twelve, and his father's long working hours caused him to be like a parent to his siblings. He took care of a lot of the work around the house and learned the nature of responsibility at an early age.
He didn't have a very good home life. Since his mother's death, his father went into a depression and was laid off from his job. He found another that didn't pay as much, so finances were tight, and Ellis had to work to chip in for the family's necessities. Ellis didn't have much time to just be a child, and had to grow up and face the world with a mind so old for a body so young, explaining his serious persona. He sees the world for what it is. Hard and harsh. He does his best to help protect people from the kind of thing he had to go through.
Ellis had a rare disease that caused his eyesight to degenerate rapidly. At first no one knew what was happening, as his father was unable to afford adequate health care, and by the time they realized what was happening it was too late to prolong his eyesight at all. He went totally blind when he was fifteen, and with that life instantly became so much harder for him, and didn't pick up until his powers were discovered a half a year later.
His father found another woman and they were soon married. As this happened, much of the burden of the family was let off of Ellis. He was able to concentrate more on his schoolwork, which he was doing horribly in, just due to the fact that he had nearly no time for homework. His father received a promotion, finances picked up, and their family's life was going much better.
Ellis' powers were discovered during the hard period that the family was facing before his father remarried. Ellis' burden of his family was getting harder and harder to bear, and he refused to tell anyone of his fears or exasperation. The loss of his sight was especially weighing hard on him, as he knew what he was missing, and fell into an anxious depression. Finally, all his pent-up emotions just burst through, and he first accidentally used his powers to create a small earthquake in the area of their home. He learned in the little free time he had how to roughly control his abilities, and shared them with his father a year later, when the family's life was better. Ellis had found a way to use his powers to create a sort of radar that enabled him to "see" what was going on. His father sent him to the school in Cassis City after hearing it through one of his trusted business associates, in hope that they would be able to help perfect his powers so that he could see even better and have more of a normal life. Ellis could not contemplate the prospect of being separated from his family that he had taken care of for so long, and protested. Still, his father insisted on his going for his own good.
